Episcopal SeniorLife Communities – The Episcopal Church Home, The Center for Rehabilitation, River Edge Manor, Brentland Woods, and Seabury Woods – is a private, not-for-profit organization serving seniors with a comprehensive continuum of care. Founded in 1868 as a residence for elderly women and needy children, it has grown and changed in response to the changing needs of the community it serves. Its visionary leadership has enabled it to reach out to new populations while always retaining the original mission to provide the highest quality of care to those in need. Significant milestones in its history include:
1868 – the establishment of The Episcopal Church Home, through the diligence of a group of women from the four Episcopal parishes in Rochester, in an old farmhouse on Mt. Hope Avenue.
1869 – the replacement of the farmhouse with a 4-story Victorian home on the same site; it would remain the primary facility for the next one hundred years.
1938 – the first change in population served, with children no longer being admitted and their dormitories converted into rooms for older men and couples.
1967 – the next change in population, with the addition of North Hall, to accommodate 80 older adults in need of 24-hour skilled-nursing care.
1972 – the replacement of the Victorian home with South Hall, providing retirement living for 62 independent older adults.
1983 – the construction of a wing called the Faith and Activity Center, housing the Chapel of the Good Shepherd, known as the “Heart of the Home”.
1990 – the beginning of community outreach through the opening of A Touch of Home, a social-model adult day-service program.
1993 – the launch of the 125th Anniversary Campaign by the Foundation, to raise $1.6 million for building expansion over the next three years.
1994 – the completion of Sunshine Meadows, North Hall’s fourth floor, for residents with mid- to late-stage dementia.
1995 – the expansion of community outreach with the introduction of ElderChoices, a care-management service for seniors needing information about and referral to long-term care.
1997 – the opening of River Edge Manor, a 49-unit apartment center for middle-income seniors, on the Mt. Hope Avenue campus.
1997 – the start-up of Traditions in Caring, a home-health agency run by a partnership of five nursing homes, including The Episcopal Church Home.
1998 – the completion of The Center for Rehabilitation at the Episcopal Church Home, underscoring the Church Home’s priorities for the new millennium of rehabilitation services, dementia care, and hospice.
